Happy Birthday Mary!!!

(and congratulations Lizzy!)

Sorry, I've been silent so long. Please don't start any rumors about me. After returning home from our Thanksgiving jaunt--to Cleveland, to Howe, IN, to Elkhart, to Meyersdale, PA, to Johnstown, PA--I was rather ill all last week with influenza. Which, of course Keith subsequently caught from me. As our friend Claire put it, "Ah, the joys of being married." We are recovering and hope to be able to sing at choir practice tonight. I'm trying to stop myself from wishing you all luck on your finals. For, alas, there are no finals. Just work, work, work.
I'm currently trying to decide if I want to apply to keep my current job in January. If I don't, I may have some unemployed time in which to travel, and see you folks. The week of January 12th...or something like that is rush week, and Keith will be busy...Also Keith and I want to make it to NYC sometime, and might get theatre tickets for Christmas.
k, i gotta go get ready for work. I'll be in touch.

Another One Bites The Dust.

An engagement announcement is a really bad way to inaugurate my use of this blog. My future posts will seem lame.

On Friday afternoon I got a book full of reference letters. They said things like:

Dear Ms. Elizabeth,
I was wondering if you know my teacher? His name is Mr.saathoff. You can call him Eric. He’s hansome, a teacher, smart, white and even like sunflowers too. He might give you chocolate and flowers. He wants to marry you, propose to you, and give you a ring too. Erick loves you! Your his queen.

Dr.Ms.Elizabeth Boosalis
Mr. Saathoff He is a hand some old man. Do you like beards he has curly hair and he’s strong and he told me you could visit some time our day and that would be a blessing and he’s really digging you Ms. Elizabeth.

Dear Ms. Elizabeth
Do you got some feelings for my teacher He really need a wife.

I like that last one a lot. It really gets to the point.

Two years ago my Papou said I could have any honky I want if I learn to make a good spanikopita. I learned on Friday morning, I will make some for all of you because it really is that good.

Hooray!

I support the Writer's Guild of America

So this may not mean too much to ya'll, but it officially happened yesterday: the WGA is on strike. Writers in entertainment are not writing any material until studios listen to their demands, namely residuals of revenue from new media (internet, iTunes, etc.) showings of the projects that they have written for. This is a big deal, especially for writers in the years to come, when new media is expected to be one of the primary ways that people see the finished product. Writers aren't getting ANY money from this right now, and soon it will affect actors as well. Writers are picketing in front of studios, and have often been joined by television actors, who support them. I've already heard cute stories of TV actors getting their writers coffee and handing out candy bars to the strikers.

The way the studios are acting is just not fair, and it will very soon be affecting the industry. Think of The Office, where we have a few writers who are also actors on the show (Kelly, Ryan, Toby), and they can't work on the show right now (and certainly not in a writing sense). Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson did not show up for work yesterday in solidarity for the writers. Wonderful, wonderful Joss Whedon has just announced that he has a new show in the works (!), but he can't work on it right now, so who knows when we're going to see it. New shows, such as Pushing Daisies (I already love this show), Journeyman etc. are in a bit of danger, because they will be losing their audience temporarily very early in their runs.

What does this mean for entertainment in the weeks to come? Well, TV is going to become very, very bad. Reruns will replace all new scheduled episodes in a few weeks, because writers are not working on the shows anymore. Movies coming out next year will simply not be very good, because writers cannot do rewrites or give any input for movies that are on a strict timetable. Talk shows will become very bad, because the staff writers will not be there--Ellen Degeneres has already not shown up for work in support of her staff writers.

I fully support this strike, even though it means that reruns will dominate the screen in a couple weeks. Think about the amazing scripts that made The Office or Firefly viewings that we had so much fun. Without good writers, the shows would not be good. That is a fact. Writer's DO deserve their cut of the pie, and if they don't ask for it now, they may never get it.

So that's my two cents. http://community.livejournal.com/wga_supporters/

Scranton: The Electric City

So Friday night Keith and I were driving down to Manassas, VA and our route took us through...you guessed it! Scranton, PA. Although it was dark, dreary, and raining, I couldn't help cheering for glee as we entered Lackawanna Co. and saw signs for the Anthracite Musuem. And since we needed gas, we got off at an exit that said it led to gas. Well, either we or the sign were mistaken, as it actually led us...downtown Scranton, past a lovely mural proclaiming Scranton The Electric City. We proceeding to get a little lost, but we saw several sites featured in the credit sequence of The Office, as well as the Steamtown Mall. Alas the weather prevented picture taking, but I thought I would share my little adventure with you, all the same.

They Really Feel It

so today on my way into work I was listening to the local lite rock station and "total eclipse of the heart" came on. i thought fondly of our radio adventures from last year. Saturday disco night, where it turned out cristina knew every song and turning on the radio both in the kitchen and the living room for a full surround sound, and somewhat unsettling experience. and then i got into work and started checking my email, and i hear from the next cubicle over, my boss break into song, as he is wont to do, what else does he sing, but, sure enough. total eclipse of the heart. sigh.
